Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
